Summer of the Zombies is an award winning zombie short film written and directed by the husband and wife writer/directer team of Ashleigh Nicols and Eddie Beasley. The pair are the founder of Owlet Pictures. This short zombie films run just under 11 minutres and was first aired/published back in 2012. It tells the tale of Summer (played by Casey Gates) a healthy vegetarian turned zombie that’s just trying to find her place in the world of the undead. You see, vegans and vegetarians are sometimes viewed as being weird or unusual by the meat eating majority in normal life. It turns out zombie culture is no less cruel.
Summer just can’t bring herself to eat meat even when she’s been turned into a zombie. She still has that famous ravenous zombie appetite, only hers insatiable hunger is for fruits and vegetables. Summer is ostracized by her undead cannibal counterparts because she just has no interest in tearing into human flesh. She’s an outcast struggling to simply fit in and find her way. Then she meets that special someone: another vegetarian zombie. Do they live happily ever after? Just how will this new found romance play out? Find out by watching this hilarious zombie short film.
We loved this one and can definitely see why it has earned awards. It deserves every bit of the recognition it has received, and continues to receive, in 2014. Casey Gates does an amazing job playing the lead role. I thought I would die laughing when I watched her awkward zombie character try to eat her carrot seductively to impress her new friend.
